Description
This seminar will examine the constitutional, statutory, common law, historical, and theoretical frameworks that created and sustained the institution of American slavery; the changes in those laws and policies that led to the abolition of slavery and the social forces that drove those changes; the legal barriers to true freedom that remained even following the end of slavery; and the contemporary relevance of the legal doctrines arising from the American slave regime and the abolition thereof.
